Lettering is the least forgiving thing you can cut, and it is also the thing people ask for most. The designs here are drawn with cutting in mind rather than screen display, which mostly means thicker strokes and fewer places for a blade to lose the line.
Working with quotes & sayings designs
- Script needs a bigger size than you think
- A connected script that looks fine at eight inches will start dropping the thin upstrokes at four. If you are cutting small, pick a design with an even stroke weight rather than a calligraphic one.
- Weeding letters, work inside out
- Pull the counters first, the holes inside a, e, o and so on, while the rest of the sheet still holds everything steady. Doing the outline first leaves loose letters skating around the mat.
- Reverse it for HTV
- Heat transfer vinyl cuts face down, so lettering has to be mirrored before it goes to the machine. Design Space prompts for this on iron-on but will happily let you skip it, and a mirrored word is not recoverable.
