The short version
There are two kinds of file here and they are licensed differently.
Files you download from our catalog. You bought (or were given) a digital file. We grant you a perpetual, worldwide, non-exclusive license to use that file to make and sell finished physical products from your home, studio, or small business, up to 500 units per design. No attribution is required.
Designs you generate yourself. Anything you make in the design generator is yours. We claim no ownership of it, there is no unit cap, and there is no extended license to buy. See Designs you generate below.
What you CAN do
These terms cover catalog files. Generated designs are broader.
- Cut, print, engrave, embroider, or sublimate the design onto physical products you make.
- Sell those finished physical products in your shop, on Etsy, at craft fairs, etc.
- Use the design in your own personal or business marketing (social media, your website).
- Modify the design to suit your project (recolor, rescale, combine with other elements).
- Re-download your purchased files at any time from your library. Purchases never expire.
What you CANNOT do
Again, catalog files. Generated designs are broader.
- Resell, share, sublicense, or give away the digital file itself in any form (SVG, DXF, PNG, ZIP, or otherwise).
- Upload the file to print-on-demand services, design marketplaces, or stock-art sites where customers can download it.
- Use the design in any way that depicts hateful, obscene, defamatory, or unlawful content.
- Trademark the design as your own brand mark.
- Produce more than 500 finished units per design without contacting us about an extended license.
Free files
Files in the Free files section are licensed on the same terms as paid files, but limited to personal use plus up to 200 units of physical resale. We do this so the free tier remains a genuine sample of what we make, without becoming an end-run around the paid library.
Designs you generate
Everything above is about files we made and you downloaded. Designs you create yourself in the design generator are different, and simpler: they are yours. We claim no ownership of them and take no cut of what you do with them.
- Sell finished products in any quantity. No 500-unit cap, no annual limit, no extended license to buy.
- Use them as a business identity. Put a generated design on your signage, your packaging, your shopfront, and register it as a trademark if you want to. Read the note on copyright below first.
- Modify, combine, re-cut and re-download them however and whenever you like.
- The free trial design counts. The one design you generate before making an account is licensed exactly like one you spent a credit on. No asterisk.
Two things we want to be straight with you about, because you may be selling with these.
- Your design is not exclusive. Someone giving the generator a similar description may get a similar result, and we do not stop them. We are not promising you the only copy of anything.
- Copyright in AI-generated work is unsettled. In several countries, the United States included, a design produced by a machine without meaningful human authorship may attract thin copyright protection or none at all. That is the law's position, not ours. We are not standing between you and your design, but we cannot hand you a monopoly the courts may not recognise, so think twice before building a whole brand on a single generated mark.
The one thing we ask. Please do not repackage the generator's output as a rival file library: bundling generated designs and selling them as digital downloads on a marketplace or stock site. That is the one use that competes directly with the catalog paying for the generator, and it needs a word with us first. Everything you make and sell as a finished object is yours without asking.
Need an extended license?
Producing more than 500 units of a catalog file, manufacturing at scale, or reselling digital derivatives? We're happy to talk. Email license@cutfilevault.com with what you're planning and we'll quote a flat extension fee. Generated designs need none of this.
